NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will address the opening session of a seminar organized by NATO’s Allied Command Transformation in Washington, DC on February 28. The Secretary General will also take part in a town hall discussion with students hosted by the National Defense University.

Deputy Secretary General welcomes Japanese donation for Afghan Forces Training
The NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, welcomed today an important contribution of 20 million US dollars from the Japanese Government to the Afghan National Army Trust Fund. The Japanese Ambassador to Belgium Jun Yokota delivered his Government’s pledge to Ambassador Vershbow at NATO HQ. The donation will support long-term basic literacy training for the Afghan National Security Forces through the NATO-run Afghan National Army Trust Fund.

Training among endangered species
Most people would be surprised to learn that military training areas – whether they are forest, coastline or open fields – hold some of the most endangered species of plants and animals, precisely because they are used by the military. But military training areas, which are often protected in many NATO member states and some partner countries, are in fact used by more than training military personnel, serving as islands of biodiversity.

Boosting training and education with NATO`s partners
Partnership Training and Education Centres (PTEC) play an essential role in supporting NATO’s objectives for partnership with non-member countries. Initially launched in 1999 under the Partnership for Peace programme to develop training and education activities with Euro-Atlantic partners, activities have since been opened to participation of all partners. Most of the 23 institutions that currently make up the network of centres – of which 12 are located in partner countries – took part in an annual networking event known as the “Marketplace” at NATO Headquarters on 15 and 16 February.
